| COMMON NAMES: Brazilian cherry, alga, algarrobo, azucar huayo, copal, copinol, courbaril, jutaby, jatahy, jutai, kawanari, pie de venado, West Indian locust, guapinal, jutai, rode locus. NOTE: although it is commonly called "Brazilian cherry" its only similarity to cherry is in the color; it is much harder and denser than cherry and much more difficult to work. SOURCES: Southern Mexico, throughout Central America and the West Indies to northern Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. The tree's best development is on ridges or slopes and high riverbanks. Throughout West Indies from Cuba and Jamaica to Trinidad and Tobago. Also from central Mexico to Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and French Guiana. Sometimes planted in southern Florida. TREE: grows to about 80 feet with diameters from 2 feet to 4 feet. |
